If you're careful, you can clear a whole row of zombies by stacking them and letting them all hit the mine at once. Tripling the potato mine is always the best return on investment. If I get a mine early on a later level I always plant food it. That's also important to remember when placing potato mines - the later the better unless you anticipate other zombies hitting it first being an issue. One double shooter has to be forward facing for the imp unless you can insure the garg doesn't hit half life until past the imp throwing tile (#4 I believe).
It takes a mine +2 double shooters of some variety to kill them. Potato mines go in front of gargs who spawn leftmost. Then I work leftward in that row until I clear it out, using green vases as only absolutely necessary. If the right hand vase isn't a Garg then you can always use the first item in the best place. I'm afraid if the Gargantuar is all the way to the right and I get a reverse shooter I'll be rushed into a bad decision in another row to use it effectively. I always start in one row with a Gargantuar that's not the right-most vase. The bucket heads are the real problem for me because sometimes they pop up in very left hand vases. I don't have much problem with the Gargantuars because you can anticipate them. I think it's mostly luck of the lay after level 30. I have more gold than I'll ever spend at this point so it's boring using the boosts because I can go indefinitely if I know where all the zombies/plants are. I'm assuming you mean highest level without using any of the gold-consuming boosts.
